Are being produced now, Nissan and Subaru have them and Chevy has the Volt coming in 2010 i think. The advantage is that we already have the grid- unlike the hydrogen car idea where we'd have to build a distribution system. The problem is that they only travel about 75 miles between chargings which is ok bc 90% of people don't drive that much in a day. It's just the perception that you couldn't drive over 75 miles that keeps people buying gasoline.
As for alternative fuels, as long as we continue to subsidize solar and wind- which I think is in our best interest in terms of energy and financial security- it makes sense to install these systems. Currently, a house in sunny CA with a $90 electric bill can add solar panels and start saving money immediately. You're just buying power...
