I was very saddened to hear from Rocky and Jennifer of Ian Gardiner’s sudden death last Saturday. Ian and Maureen only recently joined the club and attended their first club run to Whitecliffs in December. I met Ian only the once on this occasion and was taken with both his enthusiasm and exuberance and also by the beautiful job he had completed on what must be one of the nicer Vitesses around. It is a credit to both Ian and Maureen. Maureen, on behalf of the committee and club, please accept our condolences.
Christmas is now a receding memory and I trust that the break was gratefully received. My New Year has been noteworthy so far due in the main to the 5lb trout I extracted from the Orari Gorge for the New Year’s Eve celebrations in Peel Forest – nothing like a bit of skite value. I must say though, that over Christmas / New Year I was presented with another couple of grandsons bringing the total to three, but as my involvement and effort there was pretty limited the trout takes precedence. We had a fairly heavy duty couple of weeks at Peel Forest reclaiming the 1 acre that had been left pretty much to its own devices for about 10 years. It is amazing how quickly and abundantly Sycamores can reproduce and grow, almost as bad as the family. We managed to build an impressive burning pile in a generous neighbour’s paddock and fill an 8.5m3 waste taker with rubbish and varied detritus from the house and numerous sheds. Consequently the GT6 saw little action as it was definitely 4wd and large trailer time. I had intended on introducing myself to a bit of Salmon fishing on the Rangitata, but the deluges in the main divide that seemed to dominate the period saw the river flowing at well over 10 times its normal flow. It was a daunting sight and I would have loved to have seen up the gorge with that amount of flow on – definitely more than its normal Grade 5.

I quickly discovered that the windshield header fell below my eyeline. So much for practicality. On the other hand, I have about the same relationship with the seating and windshield in a 1953-62 C1 Corvette, itself directly patterned on the Jaguar XK120.
