Just three non-Japanese manufacturers exhibited at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show — Lotus, Caterham, and BMW-tuner Alpina.
At the show, Caterham announced plans to modernize the Lotus Seven ethos with electric and hybrid powertrains. A prototype is expected to be unveiled before the end of this year. Ansar Ali, the current boss of Caterham and an ex-Lotus executive, said the EV project would begin with a motorsports application.
“We’re looking first and foremost at motorsport, which we see as a testbed for the technology, ” he said.
Caterham wants to start a one-make race for the electric/hybrid car in 2011, and launch a road version by 2012.
Both the hybrid and electric drivetrains will be purchased from another manufacturer, although Caterham remains mute on the sources for now.
“We’ve been told by our suppliers that the Caterham layout is good for an electric car – there’s a lot of space under the bonnet, ” said Ali.
Ali added that performance should equal or exceed other Caterhams, as the system under consideration should not weigh any more than Caterham’s petrol drivetrains. Ali believes such a drivetrain dovetails with Caterham’s performance ideals.
