The launch of the Lotus Elan in 1962 was groundbreaking for Colin Chapman’s budding automotive company. The sub-1300 lb weight, combined with an unconventional x-shaped steel backbone chassis and fully independent suspension, was a solid foundation for a car which was soon to be regarded highly for its handling characteristics. Of course,Lotus’s now-legendary suspension tuning had a significant part to play in the excellent road dynamics of the tiny car.
The four-speed manual and 105 horsepower is paltry for today’s standards, but the light curb weight meant the car could hustle from 0-60 in seven and a half seconds; this was faster than many full-size sports cars of its day. Colin Chapman never intended the car for competition use,but privateers soon began modifying the street cars for the track. Even with the car’s renowned handling characteristics, braking and steering were altered; Chapman took interest in the private development of the car,and would often have the cars driven by his factory drivers. This was the beginning of the foundation of the Lotus 26R.
